O júri, constituído por Manuel Alegre, Nuno Júdice, Pepetela, José Castello, José Carlos Seabra Pereira, Lourenço do Rosário e Rita Chaves, distinguiu o romance “bem estruturado, que não cede ao facilitismo do romance histórico”, salientando ainda “as qualidades de efabulação e verosimilhança em episódios de violência brutal com motivações ideológico-políticas e étnico-religiosas, emergindo do fundo de uma convivência comunitária multisecular.” De referir que o autor já em 2014 fora finalista do Prémio LeYa com o romance Perguntem a Sarah Gross.
Entre os galardoados com o Prémio LeYa, criado em 2008, estão Murilo Carvalho (2008), João Ricardo Pedro (2011), Nuno Camarneiro (2012), Gabriela Ruivo Trindade (2013), Afonso Reis Cabral (2014) e António Tavares (2015).
